5 Tips for High Altitude Vacations

August 15, 2017

Breckenridge is at 9,600 ft above sea level. For some people, the elevation can be an issue.

Vacations are exciting, especially when you’re visiting a place as beautiful as Colorado. From majestic summit views atop mountains like Breckenridge and Copper, to brew tours and shopping trips at Colorado’s numerous outlets and malls, it’s quite likely you’ve got each day planned out and packed to the brim with activities. The only thing you probably haven’t planned for are the possible effects of altitude sickness.

You see, when traveling from low elevation areas to high elevation areas our bodies go through a process called acclimatization. When we don’t give ourselves enough time to adjust to the lack of oxygen at these higher elevations, we increase our chances of experiencing altitude sickness. In fact, our bodies typically need one to three days at a steady elevation to acclimate, but being on vacation and on the move, who has the time to stay in one place? Here are five tips to help ensure you don’t get slowed down by elevation and get the most out of your vacation.

1. Get oxygen!

Seems simple, right? It is, and with the help of The Oxygen Guys you can rent an oxygen concentrator quickly and easily. Doing this will help your body work through the acclimatization process more quickly and get you back to tip top vacation shape.

2. Stay hydrated.

In addition to ensuring you get enough oxygen, it’s important to stay hydrated as higher elevations can cause fluid loss and thus slow the acclimatization process. Because of this, it is always a good idea to keep a bottle of water, or electrolyte drink handy during your vacation.

3. Take it easy.

We know that this is hard to do on vacation, but try not to over exert yourself, especially during your first 24 hours in a new area with a higher elevation than you’re accustomed to. Try trading in a night on the town for a casual night relaxing instead.

4. Go out to eat.

While we may have said casual night, we certainly don't mean you can’t enjoy yourself! Head out to one of Colorado’s delectable eateries and load up on a carbohydrate heavy meal. Typically, the more carbohydrates you consume, the easier it is easy for your body to absorb oxygen.

5. Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.

We saved the best (or worst) recommendation for last, as we all know that vacation means indulgence and sometimes that means a few more drinks than normal. That said, alcohol is known to slow your respiratory system which can make the effects of altitude sickness worse.

Don’t let elevation slow you down the next time you’re in Breckenridge. Keep these five tips in mind and always know that The Oxygen Guys are here to help; with delivery services to all of Summit County and parts of Park County, oxygen and relief are just a phone call away.
